Problems using the catalog?
P roblems
connecting with our catalog are often traced to the following:
"Pop-up Blocker" utilities
Some patron functions of our online catalog use pop-up windows, and
if you are using utility software that blocks such windows, these
functions will not work. Please disable such software while using
our online catalog (you may still experience problems using certain
features within the catalog, however).
Firewalls
Some Firewall settings can secure your
computer so well that certain features of our catalog will not work.
If you experience problems, particularly with interactive “Patron
functions”, try configuring your firewall to allow you to verify
blocking manually, then permit access from our web site as you
access these features.
Java
must be also enabled
on your system for certain interactive features to work.
Personal Identification Number (PIN)
If you can log in successfully as a guest, but not with your
library card number and PIN, you may need to stop by
the Reception Desk at the Central Library, or the staff desks of any
branch library to have your PIN reset. You must be present in
person with your Library card and a photo identification for staff
to complete this process for you.
Problems accessing Heritage Quest
or other databases:
If
you are using a Mac computer
If
you have Norton's software,
Try disabling your Norton
Internet Security if you get authentication failed for Heritage Quest.
Other programs that may cause the message of
authentication failed
for Heritage Quest would be Zone Alarm Firewall, Google Web Accelerator,
and other Firewall programs. Temporarily exit out of these programs by
right-clicking on the program icon located next to the time in the lower right
hand corner of the screen. When you are finished using the databases, you can
resume using those protective utilities.
Instructions to disable Norton Internet Security
Locate the Norton Internet
Security icon in the system tray located next to the time clock in the lower
right corner of your screen. This is also how you can disable it temporarily.
You may need to disable it temporarily to discover if it is a source of your
problem.
To disable it:
-
Right click on the icon
-
Choose Disable from the
menu
-
Choose 30 minutes or
however long you need to use Heritage Quest.
-
Go back to
www.hbpl.org and access HQ again.
If
you are using Internet Explorer (IE) version 6 try this:
Turn
off the IE popup blocker OR add these websites to your popup blocker
exceptions:
*.heritagequestonline.com
*.umi.com
persi.heritagequestonline.com
rpa.hbpl.org
rpa.hbpl.org/rpa/webauth.exe
rpa.hbpl.org/rpa/default/newlinks.htm
catalog.hbpl.org
To
turn off IE pop up blocker:
Click on Tools, Pop-Up Blocker, Turn Off pop-up blocker
To
add website exceptions to pop-up blocker:
Click on Tools, Pop-Up Blocker, Pop-up blocker settings, type in the list of
sites above and click Add after each one.
If
turning off your pop-up blocker doesn't work, try adding the list of sites to
your trusted sites in Internet Explorer.
Click on Tools, Internet Options, Security Tab, Trusted Sites icon (green
checkmark circle 3rd one across)
Click on Sites.. button and type in the list of sites above and click Add
button after each one.
Uncheck the box that says "Require server verification (https:) for all sites
in this zone.
If turning
off the pop-up blocker and adding the trusted sites doesn't work you should try adding the
list of above sites to the firewall exceptions or turn off/disable your
firewall while accessing the databases.
Mac
computer incompatibilities:
Older Macs with Internet Explorer version 5, Safari 1, or Netscape version 7.2
will not be able access some databases nor display My Account/Renew tabs.
You would either have to upgrade to a newer version of IE or use a free
browser called
Opera.
You’ll want to use Opera version 6 if you
have a lower level Mac operating system like OS 8 or 9.
If you use Safari for OS X, it does not allow you to return to the catalog
website without completely clearing your cached history. You must empty cache
in Safari.

If you see this error
message below when you try to log into your account, your browser cookie

Problems accessing
Reference USA database:
Why I am getting
Username/Password when I click on ReferenceUSA from my library's website?
If you have Norton Internet Security, the Privacy Control is most-likely
blocking the content of ReferenceUSA, as a result taking you to the
Username/Password page. The instructions below are for Norton Internet
Security 2004.
Note: These
instructions are only for the 2004 edition of Norton Internet Security, if you
have a different edition of the product we suggest visiting the Symantec
website at
http://www.symantec.com/index.htm for their web support.
NOTICE: This fix is
offered strictly "as-is". Use at your own risk.
- Right-click on your Norton Internet Security icon in your system tray
and select Norton Internet Security, or double click on the desktop icon.
- Click the Privacy Control row, and then click the gold Configure button
on the right.
- Click on the Advanced button.
- Click the add Site button.
- Enter www.referenceusa.com . Click the OK button.
- On the Global Settings tab on the right-hand side, find “Information
about visited sites” and UNCHECK the “Use default settings” entry. Click the
Permit radio button.
- Click OK on of the Advanced Window, and then click OK on the Norton
Internet Security Window. You shouldn’t experience further issues.
