General Information
Oak View Branch Library is the newest branch library opened in the City of Huntington Beach.
It opened its door on June 3rd, 1995. The Branch Library is located in the Oak View Community,
mostly a low-income Hispanic area.
At the beginning, the Branch was only open 20 hours per week. In October 1995, its hours were
increased to 30 hours per week to be able to provide more services to the community. Starting
October 2001, Oak View Branch Library opens 44 hours per week.
Oak View Branch started its collection with less than 5,000 books (children and adults).
Most of the books and equipment we started with were donated. By the end of 1996, the
collection had increased to 7,700 items. Currently our book collection has
22,000 items.
Approximately 10% of the total collection is in Spanish language. The collection includes
children and adult's books, magazines, newspapers and children's books on tape.
Oak View Branch Library offers a variety of services and programs. Most of them are provided
free of charge.
Donations of gently used children's or adults books are always welcome!

Family Literacy Program
Literacy Volunteers of America-Huntington Valley (LVA-HV) has been helping adults in the
community develop basic literacy skills since 1984. LVA-HV is based at the Huntington Beach
Central Library.
The Family Literacy Program based at Oak View Branch Library is a vital part of LVA-HV's
literacy efforts in the Community. The Family Literacy Program offers tutoring for parents
and special family storytimes to help young children develop a love of reading before they
enter school.
Trained volunteers meet with parents to help them develop English Literacy and help them
learn to read with their children in English.
The Family Literacy Program offers Tutor Training Workshops three times each year to prepare

Volunteer Opportunities
If you can read this, you can help someone learn to read…Oak View is a low-income Latino community, just blocks from Central
Library. Half the parents in Oak View cannot read or write in their
native tongue. Fewer than 10% know how to read in English. They would
like to help their children learn to read and succeed, but many of them
don't know how. Here's what you can do…
