VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!
Teens! volunteer for the
Summer Reading Program

Save time and fill out this application and bring it in to the Children's Library.

The Friends of the Children's Library
The Friends of the Children’s Library (FOTCL) is a volunteer support group that is dedicated to promoting children’s interest in literature, reading and the use of the library. They sponsor and help to coordinate special monthly programs, which include an annual folktelling festival, authors’ festival, ballets, puppet shows, tree trimming party and silent auction.

The Friends of the Children’s Library raises money through several channels such as selling program tickets, t-shirts, and book bags. The group meets the first Friday of each month at 9:15 am in the Central Library. Those interested can become active or supportive members by filling out an application form located in the Central Library Children’s Department. The membership fee is $5.00.

For more information on the Children's Friends, and on how you can become a member, visit the FOTCL page.

Be a Volunteer to help shelve Children's Books
The Children's Department is now holding a monthly volunteer orientation meeting. This 30 minute meeting is held the first Wednesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. in the Tabby Storytime Theater. New volunteers are required to attend one of our orientation meetings before starting. Volunteers must be at least 12 years old. Volunteers must be willing to work a minimum of 2 hours a month and no less than 12 hours per year.

If you are planning to attend one of our meetings, please leave your name and phone number on the Volunteer Sign Up Sheet at the Children's Desk.

The volunteer orientation meeting consists of a review of the Huntington Beach Library Children's call numbers, a tour of the children's department, and of the pre-shelving area. A short, simple alphabetizing test will be given after the meeting.

Volunteers are required to sign in a special notebook kept at the Children's Desk. A record of your volunteers hours will be kept on file for ONE year. Copies of these hours will be given to you on request.

(Volunteer Service hours look really good on job resumes and college applications; PLUS you may be able to get extra credit at school)

You can make a difference!

Summer Reading Program Volunteers
Teens (sixth through twelfth grade) can volunteer to help out during the library’s Summer Reading Program in a variety of ways. Interested teens must fill out applications in May and attend a mandatory meeting. They must promise to volunteer a minimum of two hours a week during the eight-week summer reading program.

Volunteer Grandparents Needed
The Grandparents and Books program utilizes volunteer “grandparents” to read to children in the Grandparent Read-Aloud Corner, usually for an hour per week.
